At The Impro Box, we are all very excited that we are soon approaching our first block of shows as Club Voltaire, with the return of an old favourite and the introduction of a new format. In this first block, you will be treated to “The Box” and “Sparks“. “The Box” features the audience writing suggestions of objects, locations, animals… basically anything you like, and the improvisers use these to start scenes, stories and games. “Sparks” has a director who conducts the improvisers through a variety of interconnecting stories. They start with one word from the audience, and this then ‘sparks’ an idea for another story and this ‘sparks’ another story and so on.

Welcome to the final monthly newsletter for 2011

It has been a great year full of lots of amazing performances, films, special events and more! Club Voltaire hopes you were able to make it to a few of the shows and perhaps were even in some of them!

Club Voltaire is sad to announce the departure of Jennifer Monk the Theatre Manager and Tim Driver the Venue Manager. Together Tim and Jennifer really took Club Voltaire to the next level and thanks to their hard work, dedication and commitment Club Voltaire has made a place for itself on the Theatre scene and will continue to do so for many years to come. Jennifer and Tim have joined forces to start Driving Monks Productions, and we hope to see them back in our theatre with their newest work in the near future.

The Box features you, the audience, writing names of objects, locations and feelings and casting them into the box, in order for the players to initiate scenes based on them. Wodehouse aims to evoke the idle, egocentric 1930s upper class twittery described by English author P.G. Wodehouse, creator of the iconic characters Bertie Wooster and his personal gentlemanís gentleman, Jeeves. Complicated love polygons, barmy schemes and status play are all expected in this improvised take on the World of Wodehouse.

What is Club Voltaire?

Club Voltaire is a unique, grungy and intimate theatre space, set to become the destination for emerging artists, but welcoming established artists as well. The Board and the Volunteers are always working hard to bring the best emerging theatre practitioners, the most promising talent and daring new acts to Club Voltaire. At Club Voltaire each night is different, with all events running for a month long season. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday at the Australian Centre of Performing Arts (ACOPA), located at 14 Raglan Street, North Melbourne.

The Event Nights

Wednesdays: Secret Shorts

The once-a-month short film screening, allowing emerging and established filmmakers to meet, enjoy each others work, and create a dialogue about film, film practice and their careers. Tickets $5 All tickets

Thursdays: Theatre Village

Club Voltaire's Theatre Village (previously Theatrical Mayhem) is the re-launched event for more traditional theatre. With a focus on emerging artists and new works from established artists, The Theatre Village night will help theatre practitioners hone their craft, expand their networks and challenge audiences.

A night for emerging and established music acts to perform in an intimate setting. CD launches will be popular!

The Bear

A one-act farcical comedy, The Bear explores how little we sometimes know ourselves. Presented by five passionate young theatre makers – Gareth Trew (director), Andrew Iles (performer), Lauren Mass (performer), Jessica Tanner (performer) & Jahman Davine (composer) – all of whom are currently studying an Advanced Diploma (Acting) at the National Theatre Drama School.

Secret Shorts – Youth Screening

Tickets $5

November 26^th @ 8pm

Short films by youth filmmakers 18 year and under. This screening is a competition that occurs once a year at Club Voltaire. It gives youth and young people the opportunity to create shorts films from scratch and have them shown to the general public and judged by industry professionals. Awards will be given out at the screening to the Best Film, female/male actor, Direction, screen play and cinematography.

Tomorrow is a big day, today was a long one, and all you want to do is drift off. But you can't. It's late, again, and you just can't get to sleep.

Awake asleep Asleep awake is a collaboration between director Tim Driver, and actors Rio Holland and James Plunkett. Utilising movement, improv and carefully constructed scripted elements Awake asleep Asleep awake tells the story of a couple held hostage by sleeplessness. Taking cues from both absurdist writings and physical theatre, Awake asleep Asleep awake is best described as Waiting for Godot, where Godot is sleep.

Fridays On My Mind

Performance dates: 4^th, 11^th , 18^th 25^th

The evening kicks off at 7 pm with our good friend Dj Zalo a.k.a Gonzalo a Melbourne DJ, who mixes and explores the nebulous and emotional genre of electronic music, which includes experimental ambient and dub step.

And then at 8 pm the wonderful trio" Fierce Mild" will be performing some awesome grooves. For those who don't know "Fierce Mild" are a band that crosses so many genres that if you tried to label them, iTunes would explode and you'd sound like a pretentious jerk. Lively and entertaining on stage, their absurd sense of humor shines through as they perform their eclectic, yet catchy set.

We then crank the night up with the sound of Samphire at 9 pm. Samphire, a melting pot of Celtic inspired piano lines spiced with Middle Eastern rhythms and dusted with some sultry strings. With the addition of a lively dance performance by Irene del Pilar, recently arrived in Australia from Madrid, Spain.

Followed by the dynamic duo of " Brother Nature". Born from the belly of impromptu fringe parties, Brother Nature has since traversed the soundscapes between Sydney and Melbourne. By employing a consistent mix of cutting edge production with eclectic dynamism, Brother Nature continues to raise the bar for electronic music performance both on and off the stage.

Upstairs Mix Up

Brief: For November, 'Month of Sundays' delights is bringing you our "In-flight Entertainment" show, a fun and edgy night hosted by our illustrious Air Hostess: Plane Jane. Don't forget your boarding pass! for $15/$10 and when seated enjoy viewing a variety of short plays, belly-dancing, comedy acts, clowning, short film & original songs accompanied by guitar & cello for your In-flight Entertainment. Month of Sundays hosts a series of short plays & emerging acts every Sunday night, with a changing show and cast every month. Shows start @ 8pm, doors open from 7pm.

Performance Opportunities

If you have a full-length (no less than forty five (45) minutes) play, or performance piece that you would like to show at Club Voltaire, contact Lindsay Saddington at admin@acopa.com.au

You will be required to perform your piece and or/meet with the Club Voltaire selection board to have your performance/production booked for a season.

Volunteers

Anybody interested in volunteering with Club Voltaire to help with Ushering, Front of House or Technical Support Crew will be welcomed. Volunteers can receive training in their chosen field and will be given two complimentary tickets for any Club Voltaire showing for each shift worked. Club Voltaire is proud to announce the performance space is now available to hire for extended seasons (1-3 weeks OR MORE!). Club Voltaire is offering a unique opportunity for emerging artsist to hire a venue with NO UPFRONT COSTS!

Imagine hiring a venue for two weeks:

Usually, a two week hire would cost $1000, payable upfront. Club Voltaire is now offering the chance to hire the performance space on a credit arrangement.Instead of paying $1000 upfront, Club Voltaire will take the hire fee from ticket sales at the conclusion of your season, to cover costs. The remaining monies from ticket sales go directly to the artists involved!

Welcome to the Club Voltaire Newsletter! This monthly newsletter will keep you up to date with the events, auditions and performances that are happening at Club Voltaire, based in North Melbourne.

Club Voltaire runs a month long season with a set weekly schedule, so there's always something different for you to enjoy.

What is Club Voltaire?

The event nights are:

Wednesdays: Secret Shorts

A night for emerging filmmakers to show their films to industry professionals and the general public.

Thursdays: Theatrical Mayhem

A night of provocative and daring theatre that you cannot see elsewhere.

A night for emerging and established music acts to perform in an intimate setting. CD launches will be popular!

The Upstairs Mix Up is a live-on-stage, weekly sketch comedy show, with live sketches, multimedia integration and hilarious news updates, featuring the Mix Up Players.

Club Voltaire is proud to announce the performance space is now available to hire for extended seasons (1- 3 weeks OR MORE!). Club Voltaire offers a unique opportunity for emerging artsist to hire a venue with NO UPFRONT COSTS!

Imagine hiring a venue for two weeks:

Usually, a two week hire could cost $1000, payable upfront. Club Voltaire is now offering the chance to hire the performance space on a credit arrangement. Instead of paying $1000 upfront, Club Voltaire will take the hire fee from ticket sales at the conclusion of your season, to cover costs. The remaining monies from ticket sales go directly to the artists involved!

Youth Film Screening

Starting in NOW, Club Voltaire is accepting submissions for the Secret Shorts Youth Screening, showcasing films made predominantly by persons aged eighteen years and under.

A BALWYN North actor has had to call on the controlling, uptight and practical side of herself for her latest character.

Sarina Hopkins-Cassino is part of July’s Month of Sundays, a collection of five short plays being performed each Sunday this month at Club Voltaire in North Melbourne.

Hopkins-Cassino plays Gail in Anything For You, written by Cathy Celesia Allen and directed by Margaret Allen.

Hopkins-Cassino said it was a 10-minute piece about two women who “start off at one point on the continuum of emotion and end up at a completely opposite point”. She described her character as “a high-powered music industry lawyer who is quite out of touch with her true feelings”.

“She’s controlling, negated, through her life, practical, successful and very together,” Hopkins-Cassino said.

“I’d be like Gail if I hadn’t self-reflected earlier on in life.”

Hopkins-Cassino said because the plays were American, several place names had been changed so the audience could relate better to them.

She said the plays were little gems and they had received great feedback so far. “This is the first time Month of Sundays has run in Australia and they’re really good,” Hopkins-Cassino said.

“Each one is a mirror on life and they’re getting lots of laughs.”

Other short plays in the Month of Sundays series include Librarian Girls, Hold For Three and Lucky You’re With Amy directed by Margaret Allen.
